I prided myself on being a women who never subscribed to “grind culture” but the reality is I proudly wore a Superwoman cape for over a decade.
Grind culture is the idea that status is achieved by always being “on and available.” No matter where you are or what you’re doing, you’re hustling. (medium.com)
Superwoman Syndrome refers to a woman who neglects herself in order to “do it all” to perfection and ends up stretching herself too thin. (Scripps.org)
I boasted about the fact that I
And then Summer 2020 hit. You know…the summer of chaos. You would think that would force me to slow down but no….I added all the things to my calendar. And I did them well. I had a very well organized calendar and time management was on point. I excelled and my Superwoman cape was dripped in Gold. (This screenshot of my calendar gives me so much anxiety now.)
After successfully producing a virtual summit focusing on Yoga and Social Justice in March 2020, I made a plan to rest for a week then I would get right back to doing all the things. But because total exhaustion was peaking around the corner, my rest week turned into a 6 month Sabbatical. My body, mind, and spirit had enough of my shenanigans.
After a little resistance, I leaned into the uncomfortable and rested. I worked through the anxiety of having a clear calendar. I closed my computer and embraced rest as an act of resistance.
“In order to imagine [a new world], you have to be able to dig into a place that’s outside of grind culture and that place is the dream space. We won’t be able to imagine, invent, restore, and rebuild this new liberated world without resting.” Tricia Hersey, activist and founder of The Nap Ministry
So here we are…ready to begin planning new offerings but not wanting to return to the organized chaos that was my previous life. I don’t want to step out of this Sabbatical without God’s lead.
Heavenly Gracious God, I thank you for this beautiful day. Thank you for the ability and discernment to rest. To not feel forced to produce, even if that production will bring You glory. Because my rest also brings You glory. As I work my way back into my business, I ask for guidance along the path. To distinguish Your will from my will. To lead me to engage with the individuals who You lead me to, to participate in events that You lead me to. To touch the lives that You have led me to. I thank You for this beautiful gift. I will use it for Your glory. In Jesus Name, Amen.
I’ve learned the hard way that while God desires for us to live on purpose, it’s important to seek God first before setting goals and visions for our future. I’m pretty sure I could have avoided total exhaustion if I would have first consulted with God and allowed Him to direct me towards His purpose for my business and personal life (and yes that includes how He wanted me to spend my days, what events to add to my calendar, and what task to add to my to-do-list).
Habakkuk 2:2 instructs us to write the vision and make it plain. But let’s take a step back to add the first verse.
‘I will take my post; I will position myself on the fortress. I will keep watch to see what the Lord says to me and how he will respond to my complaint. Then the LORD answered me and said, ‘Write a vision, and make it plain upon a tablet so that a runner can read it.’ Habakkuk 2:1-2
You see the vision that God instructs us to write down and make plain, we receive it once we take our post and wait for the Lord’s response. Somehow we skipped straight to verse 2 and left God out of our plans.
Before I add anything to my calendar or to-do list, I intend to find my post (quiet space) and wait until God reveals the vision for this next season. And because community is vital, I invite you to join me!
